What does the unbelieving thief's criticism of "the Christ" say about the traditional view that the Jews were only looking for the Messiah to deliver them from Roman oppression? Is that what he is indicating when he says "Save yourself and us"? Is he asking the Messiah (admittedly, sarcastically)to find him a secure place in a prosperous and liberated earthly domain or is it death, itself, that he fears? This poor sinner is on the wrong side of Romans 9:17 and has left his testimony to echo through the halls of eternity. If ever the sovereign work of the Holy spirit is on display in the pages of our Bibles, this has to be one of its clearer instances... This is interesting.
