Beautiful Worship

by Stephen Altrogge on September 8, 2008

This past Sunday I witnessed something truly beautiful.

Sitting two rows in front of me was a young woman who was severely disabled. She was bound to an electric wheelchair, her mobility determined by a small joystick. From the jerky movements of her body it appeared that she was afflicted with cerebral palsy, or something similar.

Yet as we sung together I beheld something truly glorious: a twisted, afflicted hand thrust into the air in praise to God. Here was a woman whose life was essentially defined by suffering, lifting her hands in praise to her maker.

I would guess that this woman lives a very limited life, unable to many of the things you and I take for granted. She probably can’t lead Bible studies, or serve on a parking crew, or make food for new moms. Yet how pleasing she must be to Jesus! By praising God in the midst of suffering, she’s making a loud statement about who God is and what he’s like. I can almost envision the Father smiling as he sees this precious saint praise Him.

May you and I be more like this woman, lifting our hands even as we suffer.

Thank you for telling us about this incredible example of a grace filled life. Often, when I hear an off key voice or off beat clapping, much to my shame, I evaluate myself against their worship and find them wanting in comparison. I’m convinced that the more monotone the voice or the less coordinated the clapping, the more beautiful the worship is to God and I’m found, horribly, wanting in the comparison.

Dani – I’m so glad you found it helpful.

Mom – There’s no one that I know who better demonstrates worship in the midst of suffering than you!

Tim – Right on…

I am often challenged and/or encouraged when I stop by The Blazing Center. This has been both – a challenge and encouragement. Thank you for posting. It’s really blessed my heart.

Jenn – I’m so glad you find the site helpful. You’ve really hit on our purpose – encourage and challenge. Hopefully we do both!

Ted – Thanks for sharing your story. Isn’t it cool how the worship of the ‘lowly’ is so inspiring?
