Today I saw something very unexpected while driving. When I pull up next to someone in a car I normally expect to see them doing one of the following:
- Talking on a cellphone using one of those “Yes I am part of the Borg” bluetooth ear pieces.
- Singing/dancing along with the radio
- Rooting around in their nose
- Getting “I’m-about-to-burst-my-jugular” angry
I didn’t expect to see a middle aged man playing the harmonica. Passionately. By himself. At the stop light. And as he started to pull away. Weird.
Has anyone else experienced anything like this?

Welcome to Maryland!
I’ve seen people doing their hair and such. Nothing like the harmonica guy, although I suspect that some people who drive in Maryland must be playing the harmonica while driving.
I’ve seen people getting dressed… don’t ask.
Hmmm…once I saw some guy eating a banana and doing a crossword puzzle at the stoplight–and he was holding a razor, so he must have just finished shaving. Talk about late for work!
One of my coworkers said that she was sitting at a stoplight and the guy in the car next to her was playing a trumpet…
I never experienced that…but it reminded me of a time when I was on my way to take a final exam and I decided to practice the “rebel yell” i had heard on the PBS civil war special the night before, and got so into it that i missed my exit and was really late for the exam. I can only imagine what i must have looked like rebel yelling alone in a car.
Oh, I loved this. Made me laugh. “Rooting around in their nose” is a very popular one.
When I worked outside the home I often did my makeup on the way to work. It’s really not safe to apply mascara while going down the highway.
I oftentimes see people that look so dreadfully sad, like their world is crashing down around them. Makes me want to jump out and give ‘em a hug and let them know they’re not alone. That wasn’t funny like y’all’s, but I see it a lot.
harmonica? interesting! One time on my way to work, I was passed on the highway by a guy doing at least 70 (high nebraska speed limits) while reading his newspaper! he had it open in front of him partially covering the windshield! Even worse, I told my kids at school about this and we started talking about texting and driving and things like that when one student told me that his mom catches up on her novel reading while driving on interstate 80 each day. The speed limit ranges from 55 – 75mph!
Okay, I am sitting here in my room audibly cracking up!! Thanks for the laughter.
I have seen men driving and using an electric shaver and a toothbrush. That is my probably my strangest story. But yes, a harmonica does beat all! Thanks for sharing.
I’m a little late, but I once saw a mother changing her baby’s diaper while driving on the interstate.
