New Song Sketches

by Stephen Altrogge on March 3, 2009

This year Sovereign Grace Music is hoping to release a CD with songs that focus on God as Father. I have the privilege of submitting songs for consideration on this project. But music doesn’t just write itself (well sometimes it does, but it usually stinks).

So last Monday I isolated myself in a barn for several hours with just my guitar, a Moleskine journal, and my MacBook.

After prayer, blood, sweat, tears, and feeling like I had the talent of a thumbless monkey, I came up with something moderately satisfying.

I then did a rough (and I mean rough) recording on my computer. It’s just me, my guitar, and a whole lotta soul.

Take a listen for yourself (note: If you’re reading this in a reader you may need to click through to the post):

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Here’s the lyrics:

How long would you pursue
One who hated you?
How long would you keep calling?
And how far would you go
To make me your own?
To rescue one who’s fallen?

Oh the lengths you went to prove your love

You gave up your son to save me
Your beloved to make me yours
Now I call you Father
How could I question your love?
I’ve been bought with sacred blood
Now I call you Father

How much would you do
To make me trust in you?
To prove that you are for me?
You crushed your only child
So I could know your smile
And be with you in glory

Will it end up on the CD? That remains to be seen. I’m just grateful that my songs would even be considered.

Even if it does not make it on the CD, I look forward to singing it during worship. I REALLY like it. God has blessed you with such a wonderful talent for writing and speaking. Thanks for sharing it with the world.

I’m glad to see this focus on God as Father. I think we tend to forget about that sometimes…that it was because of God the Father’s love for us and His initiative in saving, that we are saved! Saved from God by God, the Father.

I like your song.

Hey Stephen
Great tune! I really like this one a lot. Would it be presumptuous to ask if you could send the chord chart so that my worship team could do this song?
Blessings
