Emily - Isn't it helpful to look to others?! The example of others in the midst of suffering is so compelling!

Ron - So glad you were encouraged. I also find the Puritans to be wonderful, as well as my ESV Study Bible. I have the sweet calfskin version!

Deek - Yep, I agree with you 100%. The only place to find strength for affliction is in God himself.

Jason - I agree, having a right theology on suffering is crucial. That's why I'm so grateful for those who preach systematically through the scriptures, including those scriptures that talk about suffering.

for me what has taken away that sting is reminding myself that God plans even trials and pain for my good... and that Christ is sympathetic and understands my suffering.

the Psalms (as well as books and commentaries relating to the Psalms) have provided much comfort to me... I am grateful for the raw emotion and pain balanced by showing there is hope found in our God.

Another thing that encourages me in the midst of affliction is stories of those who have suffered for Christ (Foxe's book of Martyrs, Jesus Freaks, biographies, etc). Hearing stories of martyrs, faithful missionaries and pastors who lived their life with the truth that eternity is what matters motivates me to do the same...

Hey Stephen,
I find a lot of solace and comfort from great literature. Books have been a source of great relief in the midst of some pretty intense trials. The main one being my ESV study Bible and also a great deal of Puritan writers as well.
I love that quote from Jeremiah Burroughs, "There is a power of grace to turn this affliction into good; it takes away the sting and poison of it. " It really is true, what was intended for evil or our harm, God will work it out for our good. We may not see those results on this side of eternity but we can trust our Father's sovereign hand. He knows best and He's in control of even the suffering that enter our lives.
Great post today, as always a great encouraging start to the day!
Blessings

The only place to go is to God. I go there in His Word, in prayer, and in the fellowship I share with other believers.

One thing that helps me is having the right theology on Christian suffering,...that is why I am thankful for my pastors not being afraid to hit these hard topics (because they come up when they are going verse by verse though the Bible, one example: http://www.sovereignjoycc.com/blog/2009/06/recommended-listening-christian-suffering/)

Also, for me, during suffering I find myself in the Psalms and Job alot!

soli Deo gloria!
