Title: A Praying Life: Connecting With God In A Distracting World

Author: Paul E. Miller

Verdict: Recommend (7 out of 10)

The Skinny:

I read this book because I struggle with prayer. My prayers often feel weak, distracted, and powerless. I get distracted. My mind wanders down hallways, opening doors marked “hunger”, “Steelers”, and “weird pain in my toe”. I feel guilty at times, because I know I don’t pray enough, and when I do pray it’s pretty pathetic. I read this book because I needed to be encouraged in my prayer life.

Thankfully, I was very encouraged. This book is full of grace, reminding us that prayer isn’t something mystical or exotic. It’s simply bringing our weak, distracted requests to our Father. Prayer is communion between a child and a Father. It’s an expression of our helplessness and dependence on God. We don’t have to get into a “spiritual” feeling before we pray or get whipped up into a “prayer frenzy”. We can bring every request to God, no matter how small or mundane, and when we pray, God really works.

The book is full of stories that encourage prayer and practical suggestions that will help you grow in prayer.

Since reading this book, my prayer life has been bolstered and my faith has been stirred. It was a refreshing reminder of what prayer is and why I should pray. If you struggle with prayer (and who doesn’t?), this book is for you.

I read this book back in June. I completely second your review. The book is a great encouragement to pursue, to be diligent, to fight for prayer in or inspite of the random interruptions of everyday life. (can i really pray when a two yr old is crawling on my lap begging for another poptart…yes, get him the poptart & get back to praying…)
