What Words Have Lost Their Meaning For You?

by Stephen Altrogge on September 3, 2009

words

Certain words that are exploding with profound meaning, like “worthy” and “mercy”, often become overly familiar to me and lose their meaning.

I need to stop and ponder those words before I spout them out.

What words have lost their shine in your eyes?

Love. It means SO many things nowadays. Everyone in America has heard "God loves you", but it doesn't catch our breaths like it should if we really understood the meaning of love.

i dont think he means it in that term…i think he's reffering to how if you say the same word or it appears very repetitivly it starts to, grow dull and sort of confuse you about what it means.

Awesome. Since I’ve used it so much it doesn’t seem to mean as much when I talk about how an awesome God.

‘Amen’ and ‘Love’.

Amen is such an incredible word – meaning more than “end of prayer” as sometimes we can use it. “So be it”, “I agree”, “Let it be so”, “Truly truly”, etc, all summed up by it.

And love for the reasons Christina said – so freely used by Christians and unbelievers alike, yet love, and especially God’s love for us, should ‘blow us away’/move us greatly.

Another word that has totally lost it’s meaning is ‘historic’. It seems like sports have drained the word of it’s meaning. Any other words that sports have sucked the life out of?

I think the word “family” has ceased to have the meaning God intended it to, for many, in today’s world. Many have never understood the meaning of this word, in this light.

Stephen – over here in the UK, where we play REAL football ;-) any time anything mildly good is done, the use of words like “brilliant”, “wonder goal”, “stunning shot”, etc…those words have completely lost their meaning!

Tom – You guys have the advantage though, because everything said in an English accent sounds profound. You could say the word “nose hair” over and over and people would marvel. I’m jealous.

Stephen,

Just had to reply – your post made me laugh!

I’m leading the songs/worship on Sunday morning – I might try and throw in a “nose hair” somehow as a profound statement! :-D

Fellowship.
Church.
Good Worship.
Annointed.
Convicted.
We must beseech the Lord for affections and emotions that are fitting and right and true to respond appropriately to who he is and what he did for us and all that he continues to do. Pride is our greatest enemy and humility is our greatest friend. Let us be a humble people marked by humility and genuiness, free from the superficiality that so marks the culture we are surrounded by. Do this in our lives Lord PLEASE for your greatest glory and our highest joy in you. Amen. Amen.

“Holy” sometimes seems a far-off and distant word. When singing it or hearing it I sometimes have to mentally replace it with a word that means something more concrete to me, like ‘perfect’, ‘pure’, ‘just’, or ‘worthy of highest praise’.

Tom-

“Amen” is definitely one. I read in revelation some days back that Jesus is called “The Amen”. I dont know all of what that means, but I think when we say Amen at the end of a prayer, we should be rejoicing in the truth that God hears our prayers because Jesus covers our sin.
